A Caffeine-Free Beetroot Drink: How to Mix It and Fit It Into a Run
A tart, caffeine-free beetroot and hibiscus drink: what is in each scoop, how to mix it so you actually enjoy it, and an easy way to fit it around a run.
In short
Mix one scoop of Beetroot + Hibiscus into 6 to 8 oz of cold water once a day. Beetroot is a natural source of dietary nitrates, and there is no caffeine, so it works before an evening run as well as a morning one.
What is in each scoop (3.25 g)
| Beet root powder | 1,375 mg |
|---|---|
| Hibiscus flower powder | 1,000 mg |
| Apple juice powder | 500 mg |
| Other ingredients | Maltodextrin, stevia leaf extract |
| Caffeine | None |
Why beetroot?
Beetroot is a natural source of dietary nitrates, which your body can convert to nitric oxide.* That is why runners and cyclists talk about it. Hibiscus adds a tart, fruity taste, and the apple balances the earthy beet flavor.
One honest note: most beetroot studies use concentrated beetroot juice with a measured nitrate dose. Our label lists beet root powder by weight, not nitrate content. So think of it as an easy, caffeine-free way to add beetroot to your day, not a copy of those study protocols.
How to mix it so you enjoy it
- Go cold: 6 to 8 oz of cold water is the label serving. Over ice it tastes like a tart berry tea.
- Use a shaker or a small whisk: powders mix more smoothly than a spoon manages.
- Try sparkling water for an afternoon soda swap.
- Add it to juice if you prefer a sweeter drink. The label allows water or your favorite beverage.
Fitting it around a run
Our Endurance & Recovery Bundle page suggests this simple order. Use it as a starting point and adjust to what feels good on your stomach:
- About 30 minutes before: one scoop of Beetroot + Hibiscus in cold water.
- During or after a long or sweaty session: one scoop of Creatine+ for creatine plus electrolytes.
- After: 2 scoops of plant protein in cold water or almond milk.
Try a new drink on an easy day first, never right before a race.
Good to know
- Beetroot can turn urine or stools pink or red for a day or so. This is a well-known, harmless effect of the beet pigment.
- Have one scoop a day, as on the label.
Want more beetroot in your day?
Reds+ includes beet root in a 2,000 mg blend of 11 berries and roots, like strawberry, acai, blueberry and pomegranate. It is a different drink with a sweeter berry taste.
