What Is in an Eye Formula for Long Screen Days
Bilberry, eyebright, lutein, zinc and copper: what each ingredient in an eye formula is, why they are combined, and the screen habits that matter just as much.
In short
Our Vision + Antioxidant Formula is one capsule a day with vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, bilberry, eyebright and lutein. It is made for people with long screen days, and it works best alongside good screen habits and regular eye exams.
What is in one capsule
| Vitamin C | 250 mg |
|---|---|
| Vitamin E (natural d-alpha) | 15 mg |
| Zinc | 40 mg |
| Copper | 0.45 mg |
| Bilberry | 100 mg |
| Eyebright (10:1 extract) | 5 mg |
| Lutein (5%, from marigold) | 1 mg |
The ingredients, one by one
- Vitamins C and E are antioxidant vitamins.* Natural d-alpha is the form of vitamin E found in food.
- Zinc is a mineral that is concentrated in the eye.
- Copper is added because high amounts of zinc can reduce how much copper you absorb. That is why eye formulas with zinc usually include a little copper.
- Lutein is a yellow carotenoid pigment that collects in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. Ours comes from marigold flowers.
- Bilberry is a European relative of the blueberry, rich in deep-purple pigments called anthocyanins.
- Eyebright is a meadow herb with a long history of traditional use for the eyes. A 10:1 extract means 10 parts of herb were used to make 1 part of extract.
A note on zinc
40 mg of zinc is also the NIH upper limit for adults from all sources. Do not add other zinc supplements on top without checking with your doctor. Our Immune+, for example, has 11 mg.
How to take it
One capsule a day with a meal and 6 to 8 oz of water. Each bottle lasts 60 days.
Screen habits that matter as much as any capsule
- The 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends it.
- Blink on purpose: we blink less while staring at screens, which can leave eyes feeling dry.
- Arm's length: keep your screen about 25 inches away, slightly below eye level.
- Match the room light to your screen brightness.
- Get regular eye exams. A supplement is not a substitute for one.
